TRUE STORY: Trooper Eddie Marks, twin brother to Charlie Marks in the first photo below, is a Legendary Trooper who
served over 50 years with the Maine State Police. During his patrol in the coast Maine area, he had a pet Maine black bear
who rode in his motorcycle sidecar. Can you imagine being stopped by a state trooper and having a 250 lb. bear
snuffling around your vehicle for illicit hooch? (Minnie loved sweets!) The story of Eddie Marks was featured in a
book written by his daughter, Karen Marks Lemke, called, "The Downeast Detective".
But times have changed, the State Police never really had an Ursus (Maine bear) unit, but they do have a K-9 detail.
The Maine State Police were formed from the Maine Highway Patrol in 1925. From 1921 until 1935, the Maine State Police patrolled on motorcycles (and occasionally horses). The earliest troopers rode Harley-Davidson and Indian motorcycles to patrol various areas of Maine. In 1935, patrol cruisers were added to the Maine State Police fleet. Maine State Police motorcycle patrols ended in 1954.
The Maine Warden Service was established in 1880, and Maine Wardens were featured for five seasons from 2012 to 2016 on the TV program North Woods Law, developed by Engel Entertainment for the Animal Planet Discovery Network.
